Looking from Berchtesgaden a narrow high valley pulls itself against  the Mount Untersberg . Here and there a green meadow slope, a limewashed wall of a farmhouse and from the center of the cut a round bell tower: Maria Gern. In former times it was called only Gern, was later an independent municipality and belongs today to the municipality Berchtesgaden. Already in the 17. Century Gern was a popular and well-known farmer pilgrimage  to a statue of Maria, therefore then the later name " Maria Gern". Maria Gern is predominantly a rural municipality, only lately more and more country houses settled down.

Some farms stick at the steep meadow slopes,the last farms accompany you up the Mount Unterberg ascent. Klapf and Bischoflehen have magnificent promising panorma views.
